In The Midst Of The Horror
Boulder runners describe the scene as the bombs went off at the finish line of the Boston Marathon.
In the newsroom, calls and tweets all went out, hoping to make sure local runners were OK. And other papers were doing the same. Getting updates from our fellow papers in Loveland and Canon City, it was a time when all of us - when not staring at the updating coverage on the TV - hoped to hear from |rnf
each and every Boulder resident to confirm that they were alright.
Their own accounts of the heartbreaking events are here.

CU Buffs counting on Pericak
Colorado coaches use a lot of adjectives to describe Will Pericak.
Words such as workmanlike, consistent and coachable. None of them are glitzy, but that’s exactly how Pericak plays football.
“He’s not a flashy type player, yet he consistently is around making plays,” Buffs head coach Jon Embree said.

TIME FOR THE BIG RACE

Boulder Daily Camera: Bolder Boulder Special Section - May 28, 2012

The Bolder Boulder came and went through town this past Memorial Day weekend, and with it came my opportunities to design not only the special section for the race, but also the Camera’s A1 (see later posts).

Thanks to the INCREDIBLE sports department here, and their trust in my designs, I got to take charge of the project above, designing the cover and inside pages.

Notes:

  • The issue was very community-centric, so to capture that, we decided using a collection of community photos on the front would be quite appropriate.
  • I went with a slimmer font - serif, of course :) - for the headlines, and designed around the words to make it feel as though the spectators/citizen runners encompassed the Bolder Boulder, which they do.
  • For some of the inside pages, I tried to play up the headlines, using their words and the art together to portray a certain mood. I think this one looks classic, vintage to match the photo.
